WOMEN AND GIRLS’ EMPOWERMENT, GENDER-EQUALITY AND SELF-ACTUALISATION

The Pearl Foundation was established in memory of the nursing sister, the late Pearl Mofokeng, who was passionate about caring for her patients. She was the Florence Nightingale of the Bafokeng family and an advocate of the women’s rights and gender equality. And this Foundation was launched in her name.

The Foundation concentrates on gender equality and the Rise of the African Girl Child-Meisiekind campaign against abuse. The campaign will mainly be led by women, and it is not an anti-men campaign.  It is a voluntary community work, which is non-partisan and non-political and seek practical solutions to the plight of women and girls. This abridged seminal paper will focus on the gender based violence, its causes and effects and give broad solutions to this complex social problem.

The African girl child is faced with social woes despite the modern progress made in most of the African continent. Africa, Sub Sahara Africa (SSA) is poor and suffer under povert(Arndt, Mckay & Turp, 2016 ; Beegle, Christiaensen, Dabalen & Gaddis, 2016). Women tend to suffer most because of various reasons, inter alia, lack of economic opportunities, lack of employment opportunities, as the society is bias to men in many African countries (Okonofua, 2013:147). The programme and the campaign intend to highlight the vulnerabilities and challenges faced by the African girl child and come with basic initiatives and solutions.

The Campaigns, Projects, Programes And Activities That Can Assist The African Women And Girl-Children Out Of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) And Gender Abuse

  • Education scholarships
  • Entrepreneurship training; Business training, Financial investment literacy, business networking and Public Finance
  • Facilitating the adoption of the abused women and girl-children
  • The Girls Guides and Scouts camping for discipline training
  • The soup-kitchens for the abused women and girls
  • The health, sanitation and counselling projects for the victims of GBV
  • The artisanal mining as a new business opportunity to be explored by women and girls for self-empowerment
  • Seek safe havens for the victims of GBV and abuse
  • Fund-raising seeking donations, contributions and charity from the public for the abused women and girls
  • Letsema a widowed-based helping hand support methods, a network cooperation, that defines, that “motho ke motho ka batho”
  • The projects of helping and supporting, ‘umtwana wa ga gogo’ next door will be encouraged
  • The Zulu cultural reed dance of the Zulu maidens-umhlanga be explored
  • The anti-rape and rape alert devices be explored, viz Eyerus and Namola
  • The SAPS victim empowerment programmes at the police stations be promoted
  • The campaign will also fight against the human trafficking on African women and girl children
  • Rudimentary farming in the rural areas, and gardening in the urban areas will be supported to empower women and girls. This will include seeds distribution and bore-holes(water-drilling) to these initiatives
  • Simplified methods of producing methane gas from cow-dung, for boiling water and cooking will be developed for the rural women
  • Pyrolysis- from plastic waste material to fuel production (oil, diesel and petrol) will be promoted and supported for the women business
  • From 16 Days of Women Activism against GBV and Abuse, To 365 Days of Women Activism against GBV and Abuse campaign
  • The self-defence and martial arts training centres for women and girls will be established, especially for the victims of GBV and abuse
  • All types of sports and athletics will be supported by the Foundation to empower women all-round
  • The Fund-raising for the campaign will be conducted by all, viz the beneficiaries, the Foundation, stakeholders, supporters of the campaign etc
  • The LAUNCH of The Rise of the African Girl Child-Meisiekind will be organised and launched at local, regional, provincial and national level and will remain a non-political, non-partisan and non-sectarian community initiatives
  • The media, publicity and advertisements will be systematically conducted to popularise the plight of the women especially victims of GBV and abuse
  • Botho-Ubuntu-Humanity will be at the centre of all our community work!
